Preview, rename and download. All in one place.
AVIF is an option for delivering modern web photos with efficient compression. This tool uses a dedicated AVIF encoder rather than relying on a canvas API that might silently export PNG. Encoding can take longer than WebP or JPEG, especially for large photos.
How it works
- Add your JPG or JPEG photos and start with the Balanced preset.
- Choose quality and dimensions; allow time for the local AVIF encoder to load on its first use.
- Compare the ready preview with the original and download the .avif files as a ZIP.
Tool comparison: JPEG / JPG and AVIF
| Feature | JPEG / JPG | AVIF |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder | Existing JPEG photo | Local AVIF WebAssembly encoder |
| Conversion time | No conversion needed to retain JPEG | Can take longer than JPEG or WebP export |
| File size | Depends on the original encoding | Depends on quality and content; savings are not guaranteed |
Frequently asked questions
Are the downloads genuine AVIF files?
Yes. AVIF output uses a dedicated local AVIF encoder. The tool does not rename a PNG file with an .avif extension.
Why does the first AVIF conversion take longer?
The browser first loads the local AVIF encoder and its WebAssembly module. Later conversions can reuse that encoder in the worker. AVIF encoding itself can also be CPU intensive.
Does the quality number match JPEG quality exactly?
No. Quality values are encoder-specific and do not guarantee equivalent appearance or file sizes across formats. Compare the converted preview at 100% before downloading important photos.
Can I switch the output to WebP on this page?
This page locks output to AVIF, including when you choose a compression preset. Use the general converter or the JPG to WebP page for WebP output.
