PNG is useful when a downstream editor needs compatible images. HEIC is decoded locally before Smart PNG optimization. Select Keep exact pixels for lossless encoding of the decoded pixels after your chosen edits. PNG files can be much larger than their HEIC originals even when conversion succeeds; choose JPEG or WebP when small delivery sizes matter more.
How it works
- Add the HEIC or HEIF still photos you want to edit or share as PNG.
- Select Keep original dimensions to retain the decoded resolution, or choose a resize limit.
- Wait for the decoded previews, apply a filename pattern and download your PNG files.
Tool comparison: HEIC / HEIF and PNG
| Feature | HEIC / HEIF | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding goal | Efficient phone-photo storage | Checked Smart compression or lossless decoded pixels |
| Expected file size | Often compact | Can be substantially larger |
| Metadata and HDR | May include camera-specific data | Original camera metadata and HDR are not retained |
Frequently asked questions
Why is my PNG larger than the HEIC photo?
HEIC and PNG use different compression methods. PNG prioritizes lossless pixel storage, so photo output can be much larger even when conversion worked correctly.
Does PNG preserve the complete original HEIC file?
No. Keep exact pixels retains decoded web-image pixels after your chosen edits. Smart compression may combine similar colors. Neither preserves the HEIC container, HDR precision, motion, depth data or camera metadata. Use the original HEIC as your archive copy.
How do I choose PNG quality?
PNG offers Smart compression and Keep exact pixels instead of a quality slider. Smart tries color reduction and falls back to lossless when checks fail or extra savings are small. Large images use lossless optimization to limit work.
Can I rename all my converted iPhone photos?
Yes. Select a custom name plus number or add a prefix before downloading. The selected naming rule applies to both single files and the ZIP.
